As we gather for the senior men’s final home game of the year it’s worth remembering there are still six more weeks of age grade rugby ahead of us, and the energy levels keep on climbing.
Our U14s have made it to the final of the Yorkshire Cup, and the U15s narrowly missed out on making a final this year on points difference. The U13s have had an inconsistent year (briefly popping on my coaching hat) but are a stronger group for it. They all have festival rugby to look forward to as well, with the 2025 renewal of our very popular “Castle Cup Festival” now less than a month away.
Meanwhile the minis are out on the away festival circuit over the closing leg of the season. Huddersfield’s festival saw our U7-9s have a great day out last week, and will welcome our U10-12s tomorrow. We’ll then be represented at festivals at Rochdale, Selby, and finally Chesterfield before the rugby wraps up for the season and we get down to the all-important end of season festivities. Keep an eye out for more photos of exuberant kids on our social media.
The U12s will also be touring at Easter, and heading up to the North East to enjoy Tynedale’s festival, and the U15s will be visiting Syston later this month on their Midlands tour. They may even have some feedback for the 1XV before they face them in the Papa John’s Cup!
Just in case this is the last programme I chip in on this year I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who’s come down on Sundays throughout the season, rain or shine, to support the future of Sandal Rugby. Your cheers, your helping out in the kitchen and car park, and your consumption of our fine food and drink are very much appreciated.
However, I’ll self-indulgently reserve my final thanks for our Coaches and Managers. By the end of the season M&J rugby will have delivered over almost 600 training sessions and match days across 10 age groups, which would be impossible without the dedication and planning of these remarkable people.
Simply superb, and a huge part of making Sandal the great club it is. I know many of them are already planning for next season, and can only say “Lunacy in its finest form!”.
See you on the touchline,
Simon Baxter
