Charles Malcolm Pashley (1949-2021)
Over the weekend the Club received the sad news of the death of Malcolm Pashley on Sunday 11th July 2021 at the age of 71 years, following five years coping with the after effects of a massive stroke he suffered travelling to Spain in 2016. He was cared for in his latter days in the Wakefield Hospice suffering with cancer.
Malcolm grew up in Featherstone and attended Normanton Grammar School before studying at Durham University and it is here that he played most of his rugby. After leaving University he moved into the teaching profession holding senior posts at Thornes House Grammar School and the Cathedral High School, specialising in mathematics.
When he moved to Walton he made his way to Sandal RUFC in 1986, where he has remained a member until his illness prevented him from visiting the Club post 2016. During that time he served on the Club’s General and Executive Committees for 14 years between 1989 and 2003, being the Honorary Match Secretary for 13 of those years. Also he was a Club Vice President from 1991 for 26 years. After joining the Club he was happy to referee Club matches at all levels and in the early 1990’s served as a Touch Judge at league matches throughout Yorkshire. Whilst Malcolm has not been seen at the Club in recent years his friends have kept in touch with him, briefing him on the Club’s progress.
Malcolm’s other sporting pleasure was playing golf as a member of the Woolley Park Golf Club from when it opened in 1996. For season 2006/07 he was invited to take up the position of Club Captain, which he accepted, following which he served as Senior Captain during the 2010/11 season, both being respected honourable positions in any golf club.
It is at this sad time that we must give a thought to those he leaves behind, his wife Carol, his daughter Kathrine and his son Matthew, plus his three grandchildren. Finally, we must remember the contribution Malcolm has made to the Club’s wellbeing over a period of some 30 years, both on and off the field.
